On my backup driver I have 23 folders all with numbers similar to this "dcce2468e37158af1d96962a03" what are these folders as I know I never created them and can they be safely deleted ?
TIA

Are they populated by two files with the .vdm extention?
These are incremental updates for Microsoft Security Essentials. See this thread on microsoft.com Social Networks.
In the past whenever you installed a service pack (sp1, sp2, etc-- referring to WinXP here) during the install a folder such as the one you describe would be created on your harddrive. The info in these folders were there in case you ever needed to uninstall the service pack, to restore your system to the pre-install state. I noticed these folders were always placed, by default, on the LAST Drive, or drive partition, located in your system (if you had more than one drive)
No they are not new and they all have a padlock on them, I have isolated them now and put them all together in on separate folder but I am still none the wiser as I can't get into them to see what they are

I wouldn't touch them. They are locked for a reason.
These are remnants of Windows Updates and can be removed. Try using Unlocker.
What do the folders contain?
The thread posted by Domino254 basically explains that the folders are created by MSE. If the folders are older than your last boot. They should be able to be safely deleted.
If you are unable to access the folder, try taking ownership of it and trying again.
Ok i went to XP and I can open them in there no problem :) some of them contain a pc icon with Microsoft labelled Microsoft Windows Service Pack Set up and the other folders contain a AMD 64 and AMD i386 folders which i am not allowed to access Any idea guys ????
