Linking My Documents to another drive

I'm tidying someone else's well-used laptop running Win 7. The HDD is partitioned with all the Documents and Pictures stored in folders "D:\username\My Documents" and "D:\username\My Pictures". There's no stored music or video.

To avoid confusing the owner I need to point "Library\Documents\My Documents" to "D:\username\My Documents", and ditto for pictures. No files need to be moved. How can this be done?

Most of the internet advice is, or seems to be, aimed at also moving the files. This has already been done. I've clearly missed something very simple - nothing unusual there.

    TIA for any advice John
