Shuts down most times, but not late at night

We have Win7 Home Premium on a Compaq CQ2014...AMD E300, Radeon graphics, 3gb RAM, 500gb HDD, Realtek HD audio. About 3.5 yrs old, faithfully updated, but I'm sure there are other, largely hidden issues I don't know about, or would take much too long to find out.

Antivirus is MSSE, and I also have Malwarebytes products (needed their rootkit one just the other day when some **** dumped something in our application data folder)

Lately there are times of the day, mostly late at night around 11pm to 12mid, when it gets nearly to the end of shutdown, then stops. No disk activity at all. (Turned verbose on, it says "shutting down" when this happens.) If the power is shut off manually at said point, there are no visible problems if/when it is restarted in the morning.

Should I look into, say, M'soft SDK for a trace?

Thanks for anything you can suggest/provide.

    Bob

If the problem occurred AFTER installing Malwarebytes then uninstall it and give System Restore a try.

I've had Malwarebytes since summer, and it's not caused any complications since.
