    Windows 7

Hello, I recently installed Windows 7 after having Vista. I have it installed and everything works, but there are times when my computer runs really choppy. There are times when I type something and it takes a couple seconds for the letter to appear on the screen.

I have a decent laptop, Dell Inspiron 1531, 4 gigs of ram, and a dual processor. Also, when I performed the system rating for my computer, I got a 1.4, and with Vista is was higher.

Any suggestions on what may cause the choppiness and the poor rating?

    Thank you

    Some things to consider:

    1) Bring up Task Manager, switch to the Processes tab, click the "Show Processes from All Users" checkbox at the bottom, then sort the view by CPU descending. This will show if there are any processes perhaps consuming a large amount of CPU time.

    2) Where does the choppiness occur? In all text boxes regardless of the application (in other words, in your web browser, word processor, etc) or just in your web browser? If the latter, what web browser do you use where you notice this behavior?

    3) Are you running the absolute latest chipset, network, and graphics driver for your laptop, preferably the Win7 versions of the drivers?

    4) Did you do an upgrade in place or a clean install of Win7?

    5) What is your antivirus and what version?

    6) Scan for malware lately?

Good tips...I am banking on the GFX driver as the issue

It does the same on mine when I don't have a driver installed

Nothing else really sticks out.

    2) Where does the choppiness occur? In all text boxes regardless of the application (in other words, in your web browser, word processor, etc) or just in your web browser? If the latter, what web browser do you use where you notice this behavior? The chippiness occurs every where, IE, firefox, office program. I type in text on here, facebook, etc, and the letters don't always appear right away. It's very annoying.

    3) Are you running the absolute latest chipset, network, and graphics driver for your laptop, preferably the Win7 versions of the drivers? When I installed W7, I just went with the Windows Update and downloaded and installed what it suggested.

    4) Did you do an upgrade in place or a clean install of Win7? I did a complete install, formatted my HD and every thing. I actually did it twice just to see if the problem would be resolved.

    5) What is your antivirus and what version? Since I just installed this and did not download anything that would give me a virus, I did not install one yet. But, I usually use avast,

    6) Scan for malware lately? No.

Also, here is a link I just posted, this shows my WEI:

For instance, some times I use a mouse, and when I use the wheel to move the screen up or down, the screen takes a second to react to the command I give the mouse wheel. Man, I may throw this thing through a window.

Firefox should be a very low number. Mine is typically 0 or 1 percent.

Do you have a jillion Firefox windows open??

I have had issues with Firefox to a degree---still running in the background after I supposedly shut it down and all Firefox windows disappear.

Do you have this issue with Firefox extensions disabled or when booted into safe mode?

I have two firefox screens open. I just installed FF because I thought maybe IE was the problem, but it seems like both are very slow. While typing this message, I have to wait until the screen catches up. I have cable internet, so I should not have a problem with my ISP.

Try running malware bytes. It does a good job on malware:

    Malwarebytes.org

    Download the free version.

    Install it

Go to the update tab and check for updates

Go to the scanner tab and choose full scan; it might take 20 or 30 minutes to run.

I agree that Firefox is too high. To me it seems that it is taking up one entire core of your dual core CPU.

What extensions do you have installed? I would recommend opening FF in safe mode (which starts it without any extensions) and try that for a bit to see if your FF with extensions may be the culprit. Do you know how to start FF in safe mode?

You should also consider creating another FF profile as an additional test. I can walk you through this with screenshots if you need the steps for doing so.

In addition, I recommend locating your graphics and network card names and visit those vendors' sites for updated drivers. Windows Update does not always choose the best, most current driver (from what many of the gurus here point out).
