Where did my c: drive space go?

I am working on a new build, one month in. I have partition a 480G ssd for C: data and programs partitions. The C: (win7 sys) was allocated 117 Gb. Currentlyu I am showing 94Gb used with 23Gb free.
I do have turned ON viewing hidden files and folders, so it is not hiding there.

When I sum up the folders and files on C: they total to around 37Gb.
That is a huge difference. I know the directory takes space, but this difference is hugh.

I can not look into the documents and settings folder or even get is sized.

    Any ideas ??

    Hello Brink,

Thanks for the reply. I have worked thru those steps, I will comment.

    1. I have gotten skittish about free software. But I gave in and attempted to download. BitDefender quarantined it reporting a virus. Tried several times. No GO.

    2. Uninstall programs: Not needed, my post was asking about why c: usage was much greater than the sum of the displayed directories under c drive. I have a partition for installed programs.

    3. Disk Cleanup: I ran it. it came nowhere near showing me where the unaccounted for 50~ GB went. Yes, I can delete the floatsum, but the amount was small

NOTE: I have used the following op systems going backward. win7, XP Pro, Win 2000, win 98, win 95, MS Dos'es, Digital Research DOS, .....

4: skipped using CCleaner for now.

5: No windows old folder, if it was in here, I would have accounted for the missing disk space.

x: At this point I decided to live boot Unbutu.

Some C; folders showed some difference is storage amount. But! the problem showed up in SYS VOL INFO which contains 52.3 GB, but W7 Windows Exporer showed nothing or 0.

So I will be digging into info about SYS VOL INFO.

    Thanks for the response.

    Stan.

    Stan,

Did you check to see how much space was allocated for system protection and restore points? This could be a large amount.
