What should I upgrade my CPU to, to make a difference gaming?

    Hi there.

    I'm NOT a gamer so don't take my answer as Gospel -- however these days it would appear that most of the real intensive functions are offloaded to the GPU so improving a CPU might not give you any significant advantage if the blockage is in the graphics system.

    I'd ensure that you get the BEST graphics you can afford that will work with your mobo and then update RAM and install an SSD for the OS.

    Usually lack of actual "Compute power" (CPU) is the last problem in poor perfmance.

    Always be aware though that as you improve one component the limitations of other parts of the system will usually show up so it's often a never ending game.

    Your actual processor is now obsolete so perhaps building a dedicated gaming rig might be an answer. I'd go these days for INTEL but that's my choice.

    I don't meet many good games on this due to my processor, it always says i need a AMD Phenom II x4 940 minimum but everything else i have is perfect even for recommended. Isn't that phenom very close to my current processor? AMD Athlon II x4 640?
