I think images and a handy installation disc/usb are a necessity myself.

Yes, I know.
I am getting a hard drive with Windows 7 on it, pre-installed and as well as 8.1 for my desktop PC. But, I will need help on doing that if something ever fails. I have Acers. Good computers, but they have been known for failing hard drives.
Should I save it to my computer or run it?
Its giving me the option to open it or save it. Which one do I do?
An iso file? You save it of course. Why would you want to run it, you already have windows installed.
After you download the iso file you burn it to dvd or flash drive.

Where are you getting these hard drives with windows 7 and Windows 8 pre installed on them from ? I think I asked you before but you never answered.
Are you talking about Macrium?
You click Create image and pick an hdd to save it to.
If you need to restore it, you insert the Restore cd(that you create) and go to the saved location and click Restore.
