I have never seen this before with all the puters I've had. I am running Windows 7, on a Dell laptop. I did install
Avast several days ago. You never realize how much you need something till you can't have it.

If you have a restore point from before the problem started, you could try that.
    System Restore

Do you create system backup images ?

    David,
On Feb. 5th my hubby installed Avast antivirus software, same day he uninstalled lots of junk that crept into my computer when I downloaded something. I went back to Feb 2nd and used that for the reset. It uninstalled the avast but also one thing that I could not find to deltete. After reset I could use my icons and they loaded right up. Hoping this fixes it and he can reinstall Avast with no problems.
Thanks David for a quick fix to an irritating problem. I am a happy camper!!!!!

You're welcome and glad to hear that worked for you.
Hopefully it was the junk that caused the problem, and not Avast.
