PDF association missing from windows file list

    Hi,
seem to have a strange problem, suddenly I cannot open a pdf, the list of files to associate is minus the .pdf extension

Also have uninstalled adobe reader, tried to re install it but keeps throwing up error 15040. Would appreciate any help to solve this
    Thanks and Regards

I saw a few pages on Google Search for that error number that suggest JAVA needs to be installed.

If OP downloads and install Adobe Reader or an alternative PDF reader, that should place the PDF extension back into the list of associations, correct?

See here to restore pdf extension support: Default File Type Associations - Restore

Where are you downloading Adobe Reader from? Try here: https://get.adobe.com/reader/
Make sure you uncheck McAfee before starting the download.

If Adobe does not work, get Foxit. That is a nice reader.
