disk check has created 1000's of copies of my files

    Hi,
Today when I re-started my system Chkdsk was run on the re-boot, a little odd as I had not had any problems. Once the machine re-started I found I had lost all my spread sheets from the "My documents" folder and that I had thousands of files of the form filename.ext~abcdfg. What has caused this and how do I get rid of all these files?.
At the moment I'm going through all my directories deleting them manually - but there are 100's of them.
    Any suggestions?
    regards
    Dave Hickman

Deleting mass files ending in specific characters

See the above thread for a very similar problem and how to solve it.

In a nutshell: download and run the Everything search engine on that drive, enter a likely search term in the search box, sort the results (probably using the "path" column), identify the duplicates in the sorted results, highlight them with the mouse, hit delete key. Each time you hit the delete key, the highlighted files will be deleted and you will be shown the sort for the remaining files. Use whatever search term the offending files have in common.
