You should not need DriverMax or any other driver finder program in Win7 which is driver-complete in the installer and via Windows Updates.

It explains how to handle drivers and if necessary trace missing drivers in Clean Reinstall Windows 7, and that Standard VGA display driver is only a placeholder which should be replaced by the latest driver from the PC or Display Device's Support Downloads webpage.

But first always Enable hardware auto-updating via Windows Update (Steps 3 and 6) then Check for Updates and install all rounds of Important and Optional, going back to check for more after each reboot. This delivers critical security and performance patches as well as drivers, many of which are queued under Optional.

Thank you Greg. After you did some work on it last night, it's doing a lot better.

I understand the problem you're having now is with your Windows 8 PC, that Defender will not start.

What is it's status in services.msc? Type that in the Search box.

It should be Running and Automatic. If not double click on the entry to Turn On and set to Automatic.

If this fails then look through the installed Programs in Control Panel>Programs and Features list for any other type of protection to uninstall, until you receive a popup saying you have no anti-virus protection which should then allow Defender to be turned on in Action Center.

Check also in Action Center to see if there is a link to turn on Anti-Virus and/or Spyware protection as it may need both chosen.

That's what its saying. It's running in manual. But, I can't change any settings because it's grayed out. The same thing goes for Windows Defender Service. WDS is grayed out and disabled.
