Hardrive space not reconcilie with actual user's used space..

I would appreciate guidance in solving this mystery:
the capacy of the hardrive in my Acer i3 proces - is 452GB, on recent check it shows 413GB used and under Users used space it's only 140GB (this makes sense to me) so...I cannot figure out how come there is such big discrepancy on the space used in my computer...I don't have great knowledge of computers but reasoning on this issue leaves me to believe there is something wrong and I would appreciate help from the large knowledgeable forum members.

    Thanks
    Samantha

Download and run WinDirStat which will allow you to see what's hogging the space and where it is. For instance, in the screenshot below I've followed the biggest folder on my C: drive to find out what is using up all the space, which is my virtual machine.

There may be a big portion that is used by the shadowstorage. Run this command and look for the Allocated number on C:

    vssadmin list shadowstorage

Thanks Boozad and whs for your help ...

Thanks guys for your input. I'm sorry to admit my limitation when it comes to computers.. wish I could understand what whs is suggesting: maybe if he can give some sort of instructions.Thanks.
As far as having the visual of the content of the drive , I do have couple pix from CC or SlimCleaner that I will try to attach here. It's my first posting here. Hoping to give you experts and idea of what is going on.
Thanks again for your time and patience

Click Start then type command in the search box. Right click on the Windows Command Processor and click Run as Administrator.

Type in the text Wolfgang has outlined then hit Enter to obtain the results.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command Prompt > Run as Administrator. Then paste the command I posted into the little black window and watch for the Allocated size.

I'm thankful to all of you guys...

It was suggested to go into restored points and adjust the maximum to 10% rather then the 50% !!(factory installed)
It did make a substantial difference as now the hd shows 199GB FREE rather then the 39GB before this process!
Great! At this point I don't know if there is something else I could do keep this computer in proper running spirit. I have been using CC on weekly base and running AV (Avast) to prevent disaster...other then this I am very much limited in other maintenance sectors.
Any advices on this subject are greatly welcome and appreciated!

Thanks again for the quick replies received and the help provided. Samantha

Thank you Boozad for your latest effort...

in helping me solving my enigma! In reality if I had to follow the previous instructions I would probably messed up the computer. The other solution applied (reducing the percentage on restoring points) was quite simple for me to follow. If you have other suggestions, in general, for better maintaining my laptop, are welcome but...
    don't forget...I'm not a pro like you!
    Thanks again to all!!!

It's probably Avast setting it to 50%, keep on eye on it to see if it changes.
Here's another recent thread about this issue:
