Personally, I would recommend waiting for Windows 10, Windows 8 isn't very reliable
Shhh! Don't tell that to my systems that are running Win 8.1 without problems, they might get an inferiority complex or something. :)
    IMO 8 = < than/ not = to 8.1
    YMMV.:)

They're still gonna have to pry my Windows 7 from my cold, dead SSD.

I'm running Win10 Pro TP on a 4 - 5 year old Toshibe L655 Notebook that came with Win7, no problems. The HDD died and I put Win10 on it until such time I need to go back to Win7 to get the Upgrade being talked about [I did get the factory restore discs to use, about $30US].

The logical assumption about an older Toshiba Notebook running the very latest OS, even though it's a test version, would be that yours should certainly be able to run Win8.0 or Win8.1 that is currently available or Win10 when it becomes available. There's a couple of caveats, one is that in order to do an upgrade of your Win7 to Win8 or later is whether yours is a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the OS, have to stay with the same. If wanting to change from 32-bit to 64-bit or 64-bit to 32-bit you have to do a clean install, losing everything from the HDD during the formatting change.
