Changing the name of the computer?

    Hey guys and gals,
I am having trouble with something. I originally set up a computer for my mother, and named the computer after her. She no longer wants it, so she gave it to me. Now i wanted to change the name of the computer and user account which i did through the control panel, then through the advanced computer properties after i clicked on computer > properties. Everything i can see says my name now, except when i go to C:/Users. If i go here, the folder says her name still, and so do all of the recent word files... Its not the end of the world, but i would like to change this if possible.

    Thanks,
    Ben

You might see if this registry change helps. Open Regedit and navigate to:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

When you click on CurrentVersion (in the left pane) you will see several settings in the right pane. The two setting you'll be interested in are called RegisteredOrganization (which contains the registered company name if one was assigned) and RegisteredOwner (which should contain your mother's name.)

You can edit either of these settings by double clicking the setting name. A dialog box will open and you can change the name (Value data) to whatever you want.

       Warning
If you're not comfortable editing the registry, DON'T DO IT. You can brick your computer.

For security reasons, the original owners account name set up at install is never completely changed until reinstall.

I do a clean install for several reasons.
One it would take care of the problem and two it gives the new owner the opportunity to set the computer the way they want it with out working around the previous owners stuff and settings.

This computer has only been used by me. I dont want to do a fresh install (this issue isnt THAT big of a deal) because it took forever for me to set this up, since i went from windows 8 to 7, and there were a few drivers issues that took a while to workout. I will try the registry tweaks after my first class and report back afterwards.

    Thanks everyone,
    Ben
