Date Modified/Type hierarchy not sorting correctly

Running W7 64 bit and I have a strange problem with sorting.

For example in Downloads I have a bunch of both folders and files. So I sort by type and all the folders are arranged first in the list and then all the other assorted files fall beneath. With that sorted I click on Date Modified and instead of arranging the folders from newest to oldest or vice-versa it sends the folders to the bottom of the page beneath all the other assorted files.

    What is that all about?

I've looked and looked but cant find the answer. Its driving me mad!

I don't remember who posted this. Thought I had saved that info but now I can't find it.

This turns out to be real easy.

    Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to the folder you want to look at.
Click on the 1st column header you want to sort by, like Type.
The files and folders will be sorted by file type.
Now hold the Shift key and click on another column header, like Date.
The files and folders will be sorted by date while maintaining the grouping caused by the Type sort.
