Windows 7 not booting up after clearing one of the partitions on hdd

I had two operating systems on my pc. One was xp and the other was win 7. Everything was fine until I thought I don't need xp anymore. So formatted the partition with win xp in it. Now my win 7 won't boot. It just shows "boot failure. Press any key to continue. " please is there any way to solve this issue. I don't wanna lose all my data and installations in win 7 so I don't want an unnecessary reinstall.

The reason it won't boot now is because the MBR (master boot record) is looking for a partition and OS that is no longer there. If a machine is setup to dual boot and you want to delete one of the OS's, the MBR has to be updated to reflect the new configuration.

I am not big on Windows utilities b/c they never seem to work in my experience, but theoretically if you use a recovery/repair CD for Win7 it should detect the W7 OS and ask if you want it to repair the installation, which would mean repairing the MBR in this case.

I prefer to use third party tools, like Paragon's Hard Disk Manager, which I have burned to a bootable USB stick, but I don't think it's free (can't remember now). But there are many free MBR tools that can be burned to a USB stick or CD.... you will need to boot from one of these if you don't have the Windows repair CD. A utility like this will repair the MBR and allow you to boot again.
