Boot issue/possible hdd issue

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Here is the issue I'm having, and what I've done to try to solve it (bear with me):

1. Woke up this morning and computer wouldn't "unsleep", did hard power down, restarted normally, showed splash screen, then went blank, monitor turned off, nothing. Tried this a couple times.
2. Hard power down, started in safe mode, ran system recovery, it didn't work, same thing as above.
3. Retried this, ran recovery, it restarted but same as above. Splash screen, then nothing.
4. Hard power down, booted in safe mode, got "recovery successful" message, restarted.
5. When it restarted it went to chkdsk screen and ran chkdsk successfully. It deleted an index file and recovered a bunch of stuff. Then restarted, went to splash screen, then nothing. Went blank, monitor powered off .

Is there anything else I can do besides taking in to get repaired? Any assistance would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi have you tried running the dell diagnostics tools from F12 when starting computer? test the hard drive? some dells have that capabilities.

I actually went to try but waiting to long to hit F12, then booted in safe mode. When it came up, it finally said "Windows has recovered from and improper shut down" or something like that. Then restarted normally and it worked. Hopefully it should be good.


Should I still run the Dell diagnostic? Thanks for the help!

It can't hurt to test

Is the HD detected in BIOS setup? If so you can try to rescue any files using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Report back results of Dell Hardware Diagnostics from F12 Menu
which should determine with certainty hardware including HD's condition. If the HD checks out then run a full Disk Check from disk System Recovery Options Command Line.

If problems persist boot into the Win7 disk or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair. If it doesn't find anything or offer to System Restore, then choose and run System Restore from System Recovery Options.

Does the PC still have the factory install? If so that is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts won't even run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall Windows 7

Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep a perfect install just like a million others have done without a single complaint.
