Laptop (HP) doesn't shutdown/hibernate/restart after windows update

    Hello,
Yesterday I downloaded three windows updates from the prompt and ever since haven't been able to get the laptop to shutdown, hibernate or restart. I even tried to force shutdown by pressing down the power button, but nothing happened. Then I let the battery drain, hoping after I switch it on after plugging it, it would be fine. The laptop resumed and again refused to shutdown. I browsed the HP Support website and it recommended a BIOS update. The BIOS update requires the model & serial number of the laptop, which I couldn't find anywhere (there's no sticker carrying product info on the back), so the info might be found behind the battery compartment or the battery. I do not know if it's safe to extract the battery with this issue lingering. How do I proceed? Is there an alternate way to know what, in the name of God, is going on?
And also the window "Restart your computer to finish installing important updates" keeps cropping up and nothing happens when I click the 'Restart Now' option.

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would not remove the battery
See if you can enter sfc/ scannow from command prompt I believe Option 2
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

What is your antivirus program installed ?
