windows 7 to 10

What is the opinion of members about changing to windows 10 in july, the good, bad, ugly

I've tested it extensively. As far as I'm concerned, it offers nothing useful to me for the desktop, and I am strictly a desktop user. I will not be upgrading. I'm sure my next computer will come with Windows 10, and I'll just roll with it. But not until this machine dies.

I mean, I don't need any of the metro/modern/universal/whatever-they're-calling-it-this-week stuff. The desktop works, and they've made it easy to just ignore the other stuff for the most part, but it's ugly, flat, and not nice to look at, compared to Windows 7. I don't want my desktop to look like a phone. That's just my aesthetic judgement - YMMV.

Isn't it supposed to be more secure plus other things, I do not use metro or any modern apps they are going to have

From the sounds of that I don't want it either. I also don't like the phone/W8 look.... but a couple quick questions:

1. Is there a way to make it look and feel like W7? (classic DT, aero, etc) I ask because the first thing I did with W7 is put back the functionality of XP they took away... like the quicklaunch, the "show desktop" icon, etc. Sometimes the OSs come out of the box in annoying configurations but can be 'hacked' to be 'retro'. ??

2. Is it worth bothering? Is W10 faster? Better? I heard it was supposed to boot in like 20 seconds, but of course the OS always boots fast when nothing's installed on the machine. :)

As of now, no, there is no way to make it look like Win7. No Aero, and MS seems almost militantly unwilling to bring it back. And you still have the new start menu, which is like a junior start screen a la Win8. The desktop functionality is more or less the same, only ugly. Some people like it, or say they do. It might be marginally faster - I'm not really convinced. Maybe faster at some things, slower at others. It seems to boot quickly, but once you see your desktop it is a few minutes before you get anything like responsiveness.

So, no, I would say it's not worth the hassle. Like I said, I'm resigned to getting Windows 10 on my next computer, and I'll be able to live with it, but I will not be upgrading this machine. Classic Shell is your friend.

I really like Windows 7, and I wish they'd kept it as the desktop line of development. Oh well! It's supported until 2020

Well I'm out too, then. I love W7 and am not ashamed to say I like eye candy. I stare at my computer 12+ hrs a day and I want it pleasing to my eye. I can't stand the 2D tile look of W8 and the newer GUIs. Give me lovely 3D shading, fat curves and highlighted contours any day!

As for buying a new machine down the road, unless something drastically happens between now and then to make W10 like W7 GUI-wise, I will just migrate my current W7 system over to any new machine using Paragon Adaptive Restore. It works like a charm... just restore a BU image to the new machine, then boot from an Adaptive Restore USB stick and let it detect the installed system, read the hardware, and inject the correct drivers. Also fixes the MBR... and voila... you can boot into your completely wonderful system on the new machine.

Like you say... they are patching W7 until 2020... we can hope by then that Win20 will be out and they will have come full circle back to an aero type GUI.

I won't be installing W10 over my W7 install.
If I get a new machine with W10 on it I'll keep it (I would've wiped W8 in the same scenario).

Well they skipped from W8 to W10 and are burning through OS versions almost as fast as FF updates. So who knows what the OS will be if you don't need a machine for another year.
