    Big problem with computer

I am having a big problem with my desktop. It does not finish installing windows live essentials and I'm running a system scan for errors on its hard drive and its stuck at 16 percent. Its a windows 7 home premium 64-bit HP Pavillion.

Change that, even worse. After about 5 minutes after boot up you think it working fine then you go and do anything on it and it completely locks up, I have had to restart it 3 times now!

    "System scan"-------do you mean chkdsk?

How long has it been stalled? I'd be inclined to let it run for at least overnight.

You could also download and run the disk utility from hard drive manufacturer--Seagate, Western Digital, or whoever made the drive.

Windows Live Essentials...........is that something that you downloaded to your hard drive and then attempted to install from the hard drive? Or is it something that is installed directly from a Microsoft server? Did you get any sort of on-screen error message about the installation failure?

Can you try booting into Safe Mode and do the Start-Restart a couple of times? That might help clear the way back into normal Windows. If you have the Windows DVD, maybe Startup Repair may also help.

You don't need to download it, just open an elevated command prompt then type in sfc /scannow and hit enter.

    You reinstalled Windows.

    Did that resolve the problems?

What problems do you still have AFTER the fresh Windows installation? Whatever they are, I'd guess they are related to hardware.
