Could Temp folder contents be deleted?

    Hi,

These past few months, i've been noticing my C drive space getting smaller and smaller even if i did not download/install anything. I did a search for folders in my C drive that's taking up a lot of space and i landed in my temp folder ( C:\Windows\Temp ). That folder is packing hard with almost 4000 files and close to 80GB. They mostly consist of .sqm and .tmp files.

So my Q is am i able to delete everything in there without actually getting any crashes, issues and whatnot? Are the files there absolutely required? What are those files?

Enough questions for today. Looking for suggestions, tips, etc.

    Thanks !

Deleting them is fine, do what I do and delete but don't empty recycle bin. Any problems after you clear the folder then you just restore the files from your bin.

Go to my computer, go to properties, go to disc clean u,p once there check everything that you want deleted. Temporary files should be on the list. and will be deleted. Temorary files are just that, temporary you can delete them. If they are not deleted using the method I explained, make a systemimage of your OS, then manually delete them.Iif there is a problem, which there probably will not be, you can use system image to restore them.

I'm not ready to mess things up though. Thank you but i need to make sure it's safe to do them.

Already did a disk cleanup before posting this thread. It's empty.

The above question and answer was given in infopackets news, read it and decide. I read it and stick with my answer that it is safe to delete. Rather than use the convuluted process given in the article. You may just want to follow the instruction of the prior poster. Delete and leave in your recycle bin for a while. You may also want to make a system image first.

Before you Delete your TEMP files, it might also be a good idea to create a System Restore point.
I very much doubt you will have a problem, but if you do, a system restore is easy and quick to do.
(80 GB of Temp files??? WTF??? That is a lot of "junk")

Yeah, i just did a system restore. But i have to get on XP to 'block' it from deleting my Win7 restore points.

I'll be back in a few to update on how it went. If i'm not on for the next 30 minutes, something bad happened.. lol

    Update :

Okay, i created a system restore point.. Not too sure which .tmp files to delete so i looked for a program to do that for me. Landed on 4DiskClean Pro and tried it. That program wiped everything in Temp folder. Did a couple of reboots and everything seems to work fine. I think it's indeed safe to delete everything in Temp folder.

Thanks for all your help. +Rep on the way.

In C:\Windows\Temp Windows and many applications save the temporary files needed for their operation.

Sometimes these files are not deleted when they are not needed anymore and take valuable disk space (their size can be hundreds of megabytes and even more). These files can be a security threat too because if they are examined with binary editor program one can see parts or even whole documents, images, etc.

I have Mil Shield - a trustworthy security program that cleans whole windows temporary files folder at any time you want:
