explorer.exe crashes when folder windows have been open for a while

Please help! Explorer.exe crashes when folder windows have been open for a while. No useful information seems to be given in Event viewer and I've tried disabling everything attached to explorer using the "autoruns" utility. Nothing seems to work. I've also tried sfc /scannow and most other suggested fixes. I've added tge sevenforums registry fix and have attached the dump files that it produces.

    Thanks, Steve

Seems to be a problem with IObit uninstaller shell extension.

    Code:
    Unable to load image C:\Program Files\IObit\IObit Uninstaller\UninstallExplorer32.dll
You won't get many recommendations for IObit products here. Personally I do use IObit Uninstaller sometimes but it's blocked from dialling home by my firewall and the shell extension has been removed. The problem is that I removed it so long ago that I don't remember exactly how I removed it.

If you've got Ccleaner installed have a look at startup entries and disable or delete any IObit entries.

Thanks Callender. I have uninstalled everything from IOBit but unfortunately, I'm still getting explorer crashes. I tried to use windbg to analyze a recent dump file but I don't really know what I'm looking for! It mentioned a source code error:

    FAULTING_SOURCE_CODE:
    No source found for 'd:\w7rtm\com\ole32\com\dcomrem\idobj.cxx'

I've uploaded a recent dump in case you can help me any more.

    Thanks

    Try this Hotfix from MS:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2494427/en-us

[Edit] Suggest creating a system restore point or system image backup first!

Check "Cause" section in above link.

    From your current crash dump:

       Note

    SYMBOL_STACK_INDEX: 6

    SYMBOL_NAME: networkitemfactory!FDBackgroundThreadHandler+21

    MODULE_NAME: NetworkItemFactory

    IMAGE_NAME: NetworkItemFactory.dll

Try repairing your PC with Window Repair Disk.
    To create disk go to
Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore
And Click "create a system repair disk"

This May Help To Fixed Any Corrupt File.

Or Download Microsoft Fit It software

Okay - the moment I have no idea but would suggest:

As a test disable all non-microsoft shell extensions.
Fully remove any software that you no longer use that has installed a shell extension.

In the meantime try portable Explorer++ for file browsing. If that doesn't crash then it means that you've got a software problem rather than a system file problem. You can install it and pin a shortcut to your taskbar.

    Explorer++

For a quick way to restart explorer when it crashes see Rexplorer:

    Sordum's Small tools

You can extract the executable from the small tools package and run it when needed.

    [EDIT]

    Also worth a shot:

Check for updates for any software that installed a shell extension and if updates are found - install them.

If using old versions of free software that installed a shell extension - fully remove the software and reboot before downloading and installing the latest versions.

If you like you can run a scan with UVK and upload the log containing a list of anything that integrates with explorer.

Download UVK - UVK Installer (exe)

Once installed right click the desktop icon and choose run as administrator.

On the welcome screen choose "Scan & Create Log" and upload when finished.

    Settings needed:

Many thanks Wallander, I am using Explorer++ and set the option to replace explorer. It works fine now with no crashes...brilliant!!! You are THE MAN!

Thanks for letting us know. You might find that if you investigate shell extensions that integrate with Explorer (right-click options displayed when clicking file/ folder /drive) then you might solve the problem however it's not that easy. If you're happy with the workaround - then at least you can use your machine. :) I only tried Explorer++ after experiencing explorer crashes myself around a year ago but that's been fixed now.
