Screen goes white after 5 minutes of inactivity

This is a brand new machine. After 5 minutes without mouse or keyboard input, the screen goes white. It can be restored by clicking the mouse and then hitting the esc key. When I try to boot into safe mode, the system will not accept my password. More information: the system does not identify my Samsung 23" monitor--it uses a generic driver (Generic non-PnP monitor) and says the correct setting should be 2068x1152 which does not fill the monitor screen. The native resolution of the monitor is 1920x1080, which does fill the screen, although there are often streaks running through it.

It maybe a screensaver kicking in, perhaps not working correctly.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm pretty sure it's not the screensaver--it happens whether the screensaver is on or off.
