Receiving background sound resembling USB connect and lag

My PC at intervals of 5 to 10 mins produces sounds like the ones that resemble when you plug something in the usb slot, this takes place while gaming and even when i am on the windows screen, after the noise it lags for a second then comes back to normal but eventually after about 5 to 6 times of doing that my system completely freezes on me, i cant move my mouse, cant type anything and not even ctrl+alt+del does the trick, the only thing left is to restart my system, which being a gamer you know is frustrating ... how do i get rid of it? pls help.

The sounds may not be the USB, as USB would scan the computer for every 5 seconds or more, if any USB is connect.

But it could be the HDD going to failed.
Hence, the system freeze, as this is HDD issue.

Don't use the PC and let it run itself, and listen if there is any other sounds.
This is to confirm if the sound come from the HDD or something else.
But system freeze can means not only HDD, but something else is running in the background.
By running in the background, and uses all resource of the system.
Do note on the lights on the computer.
Power is always on. Wireless, if any. Battery for laptop.
Reading and writing on the HDD.
Monitor for a while if the HDD light is always running, hence it is the HDD is reading or something else is using the HDD.
As this will prevent you to use the computer, just like freeze the system.

It certainly looks as if you might have a dying hard drve. Before taking any other action backup all your data files and anything else you wish to save to an external hard drive.
