svchost.exe + NTDLL.DLL Causing high CPU Usage

I have another question ... did you do a clean install of Windows 7 using MS download or did you buy the DVD? I see an RTM version that does not appear to be correct.

Its an actual version. Clean Windows 7 installation. I formatted the PC which had Windows XP 32 Bit on it. Did a full clean install of Windows 7. This is the Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit edition. 100% Legitimate. Kaspersky was the Windows 7 trial version. I uninstalled it and will not use it. Bit Defender is the free version I am using. I'm not going to buy an Antivirus until I can figure out this issue. Hopefully it was just Kaspersky that was causing the issue.

I'll keep you updated as to what goes on in the next day or so.

Just to let you know I'm a technet member. So I got the Win 7 Professional RTM edition. :)

Its all good. I should have uh said it earlier on. Yeah I love Windows 7 just this issue is annoying but eh I had some issues when I got Windows XP when it first came out.

I am going on the suspicion now that it was kaspersky doing it. Ever since I removed it. I noticed a decrease in the overall cpu usage of the system. When Kaspersky was installed I noticed even simple tasks like changing the volume and or opening up folders would spike the CPU slightly for a few. Without Kaspersky that hasn't been happening. Plus whenever the CPU issue would happen when it spiked, I'd look at Process Monitor and notice Kaspersky running a ton of processes rather quickly.

I've never run Kaspersky, even though I bought it once. On the box it said that it was compatible with XP x64, but when I tried to install it, I found that it wasn't. When I called Kaspersky, they immediately authorized a full refund. I guess things didn't go as they planned. I guess that it is now okay with x64, since so many are using it, but I went to Nod32 and never looked back, until I installed WS2K8 and found that Nod32 wasn't compatable with that, unless I paid them a fortune for a server version.

Since then, I've been running Outpost Security Suite, which includes a firewall, as well as AV. I don't think that the AV is as highly rated as the others, but I have a lifetime license for it, so until I find some loose change in my pockets, I'll stick with it.

Yeah been reading. Folks who have Windows 7 32 Bit Kaspersky runs pretty nicely. 64 bit though nope. I removed it and I got rid of Bit Defender. Im trying Microsofts Security Essentials. As another IT technician told me to give it a whirl. So far my CPU usage while idling is around 3%-8% where as it was 10%-20% with Kaspersky. So far the PC is running nicely and no Spikes.

I should have uninstalled Kaspersky earlier but I didn't. I'm gonna give them a call. I the full version of it when I had Windows XP. I'm gonna ask for my money back because the Code I had only worked with the older Kaspersky version I had. Its BS though how they can get away with forcing users to have to completely buy a new version of their Antivirus and Security software if they want to upgrade. Its all good. Even 3-8% is not all that low for idle, but since you gave a range, I doubt that is really idle. My CPU remains consistently at 1% at idle, but will spike up to 2 - 3% when running some background function.

Well I say 3-8 because the computer itself has some processes that are always running. If I were to turn them off then I'd get 1-2% at all times but I cannot turn them off. Should have gone more in depth as to when my pc is idle

I have the same high CPU Usage by svchost.exe in Windows 7 x64 after several hours of Windows 7 usage.
Process explorer shows that "ntdll.dll! tppwaiterpthread" is using CPU in the svchost.exe. I stopped the svchost.exe in the Task manager, and clicks on some GUI elements stopped working: on Control panel elements in Start menu and on an icon in the notification area.
I never installed the Kaspersky. But I saved an Excel file to the Office live. (Saving an Excel file to the Office live in Windows Vista x64 causes high CPU Usage by explorer.exe when the link to the Office live account is visible in My computer. Removing the link stops the high CPU Usage by explorer.exe.)
It also looks like the high CPU Usage by svchost.exe began to appear after installing Windows Defender from Windows Update.
How to prevent the high CPU Usage by svchost.exe?
