Are you sure it is freezing? Maybe AV software is on-access scanning the files. It does sometimes happen in my case due to ZoneAlarm, usually with large files. Explorer may show (not responding) during it.

Test the hard drives, test for infection, run SFC, replace your AV to test difference, and the other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I have tried almost every option accept replacing my antivirus. Due to it being random, it has only happened to me twice out of alittle bit over a dozen times i have transfer files between the drives.

If its of interest, I have just finished dragging and dropping many GB of data folders (Documents, Movies etc.) from my internal HD (not my System which is on an SSD) to an external USB backup drive. When finished it stated that the drive (I assume the external) could not be recognised, but all the files had been copied.

Confirm the files were copied, are backed up elsewhere, then run the external HD maker's HD Diagnostic
Windows scan on it or Partition surface test with Partition Wizard followed by a full Disk Check.
