Problems with Toshiba Laptop dual screen

I am posting this question here, as I am in a little state of bother at the minute.
To start things off, let me tell you why my Toshiba laptop has a dual screen; the original laptop screen got badly damaged, with just a white screen showing. However, with the aid of a dual screen, it was still useable to me...until two nights ago.
I went to switch the laptop and the screen on, and all of a sudden, a black screen appeared with just the cursor showing. I just thought that it 'must be an update' that was until when it automatically logged on to my account, with only my background image showing and cursor appearing; no taskbar or anything else. At first, I just switched it off, thinking it must be a minor technical fault, but when switched on, the same problem occured. It really is quite irritating
I'm not tech-savvy at all, so my knowledge is a little bare on the subject. Any help on fixing this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I would think your damaged display wanted to come alive and the rest of the desktop is on it. Try this:

When on desktop (looking empty), right click and select Screen Resolution. Don't click anything with mouse. Press Win+right arrow, press it until Screen Resolution comes to your working display. Then (hopefully) you will see both monitors, click identify, and make the working one your main display (tick the checkbox), and apply. Then disable the non-working display (show desktop only on 1 or 2, depending on identify result).
