Slow Boot up and Shutdown of Windows 7

Suddenly my PC is taking a long time to Shut down and boot up. I have an SSD and bootup time is normally 35 seconds. Suddenly that is taking over 5 minutes. I have tried all the usual remedies and by chance have discovered that one of my external drives is causing the problem. If I disconnect it all is back to normal! The drive is not showing in Windows Explorer but in disk management it is shown as working properly. Looks like it might be shot but I need to take off all the data that's on it. Any ideas how to check the drive.

Have connected the Ex HD to my Win XP PC and it has been recognised so I am running a full disc check now!
