Using Windows 7 as main OS

Missed my point.
E-mail actually stays on the server,where one can read it if stole your password,and you keep it on your hard drive where also can be read if somebody already gain access to your PC(trojan).
IMO,most secure is to download your e-mail on your hard drive as more often as you can,DO NOT leave a backup copy on server,and keep your important e-mails on external drive(if is possible,and I believe it is because external drives are available to everyone today)

A couple of points. First of all I run Win 7 as my main OS, but have taken the following precautions:

I have my drive (I am on a laptop) partitioned into two partitions, a system and a data partition. The system partition has my OS and programs and the data partition has everything else. If my OS completely fails, I can just reinstall and my data should not be affected.

I have instituted an aggressive backup scheme. I backup my data partition daily. I am using Acronis to create incremental backups. Every fifth backup is a full backup. I image my OS drive weekly. All of these backups are put on an external USB harddrive.

As far as the e-mail on a web server or local, I am very much a proponent of keeping my information in my control. I have a gmail account, but access it via pop to keep my email local. That's why I also am not a huge cloud computing fan. I want the OS on my computer, the programs on my computer and my data on my computer.

Media PC uses Windows 7 build 7077 and 7100 in a dual boot as every day system, mostly right now using the new build for everyday use.

I too am now using RC as my main OS. I've got everything on the same partition but I use SyncBack to backup to my server. If I have to reinstall (e.g. I break something whilst playing) I can reinstall and be up and running (apps and data) in about two hours.

Sure, why not? I looked at the risk of both my internal drive and my USB drive failing at the exact same time to be pretty small.

I also have my system periodically backing up to my WHS, so I have additional backups in sepaerate places.
