Installed 7 Home on a Laptop that already had 7 Pro..Want to Upgrade?

    Hi to everyone,

I have two older laptops we are going to offer to a couple people that could use a computer. The first one had locked up and had a battery recognizing issue, so I took my old disk copy of Windows 7 Home and re-installed windows. I then had an issue with receiving proper updates and getting them activated, so I called Microsoft support.

After a bit on the phone, I had the stunning conclusion that these laptops came from the manufacturer with Windows 7 Pro already installed, and the lady confirmed (at least on this laptop) that the product key underneath the laptop was valid. (But I don't have a Win 7 Pro disk)

So we did something right from there that allowed me to upgrade windows and then activate the product key. We then went back into properties to confirm Windows 7 Pro was in fact running, and that the license said it was active.

I am now trying to do the 2nd laptop but of course a month has gone by and I can't completely recall what we did. If I don't need to, I would rather not have to call the help line and spend the time. Not that it's not resourceful, but if someone could outline steps, I am confident I can start by trying to do it myself. We didn't need a disk and all I remember is Microsoft logo key + R and then I typed Slui 3 or Slui 4 but that may have been for activating once I upgraded.

I did try to type every search into the net first and try some things. Mostly the "anytime upgrade" comes back as a suggestion, however, I think that has expired plus I don't have an upgrade key (it says not to use my product key unless that's wrong).

Thanks a ton. Appreciate everyone's feedback.

    Hi
    As its an HP lappy,
It should have a reset to factory original settings program,

All programs >recovery manager > enter.

As you will be using the in-built W7Pro recovery system you will NOT need to reactivate the lappy, it should be done automatically, and it will be the pro version, the sticker on the bottom will also tell you what was originally installed
