Left alt functions not working, Windows 7

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum so a big hello! I'm a big fan of Windows 7 and suspect I'll be using it for several years to come.

I'll try and make a complete post in the hope that others find this thread (maybe via Google etc) in future and it helps with them. I Googled for problems regarding the left alt functions not working properly on a Windows 7 keyboard but couldn't find anything that fit the bill.

I'm using the latest version of Windows 7 home 64 bit with all updates applied. It's on a laptop. There's a separate numpad on this keyboard.

I've opened up the on-screen keyboard, and when I press the right alt button, the European letters with an accent (such as ) appear. When I press the left all button, the on-screen keyboard shows I'm pressing the left alt button nothing happens. All the keys apparently stay the same.

It appears that I've inadvertently activated some kind of function that stops my left alt button working properly, but the hardware button itself is working fine.

This problem appears in programs such as video games and photoshop. I've checked for sticky keys and they are not activated.

Please help! I'd like not to lose any more characters in Path of Exile Hardcore because of some insanely bizarre Windows 7 keyboard quirk.

Thanks! =)
