Thanks ThrashZone--I had read the Overview/Description but not the details of this KB then hid it since I have CEIP turned off.
I un-hid the update and ran it, and although I've now run the bloody thing (sfc /scannow) I seem to be in some sort of black hole where first it says it successfully repaired files, then it says "corrupt and can't repair" then Success again...argh well that is for another thread.
Thanks again for pointing this out.
I think MS is strangling Win7. I have a x32 SP1 machine here which took over 2 hours to determine which updates it needed. I installed a couple dozen, then when I went back for more it's been another hour so far, with 0% downloaded.
I see this virtually every time I update a machine, though usually not this bad. I think it's largely because MS would not issue SP2, which would have made taking update inventory so much simpler. It's not unusual to have 150 updates needed, and many are big and complicated, causing a high rate of failure. Win7 never used to be this way. It began several months ago, and has only gotten worse. I believe server apportionment is also taking place, with guess which OS getting preference.
I started this thread by saying I spend most most of my time on Vista. Well, that's no longer the case, as I accidentally overwrote my Vista drive while installing Zorin. I decided not to reinstall vista, as all the updates and 2 SP's would take forever, and it's only supported until 2017. I'm back on W7 now, and it's working fine. I have been avoiding the W10 updates and my computer is running fast and efficiently. So, I guess Microsoft has not permanently damaged W7. But I never installed W10, so that may be why things are working so well. In any case, I'm happy with W7 until 2020. Assuming things continue to run smoothly. I do have Zorin on the other drive and plan to become expert with it, so that when W7 is no longer supported, I can easily transition to that. Unless MS comes to its senses, and provides an OS for PC users, who don't want their computer turned into a phone, and their every action tracked and sold to advertisers.
Yes V?Apparently the fix for sfc errors was included in this update

I was tempted to participate in the preview program, even downloaded the iso file (7/4/15) which is still in my downloads folder. I looked both on my OS/Programs drive and my main data drive and find nothing around 3.4 GB. I looked with ZTreeWin with the file spec $Win*.* and found nothing. I did reserve a copy and I still see the occasional nag to install Windows 10. My wife did an install early in the summer and lost all her data. I've been waiting for some of the worst bugs (like her failed install) to be dealt with. Now it is just 'creative procrastination.'
Are there really good reasons not to 'fold' and install 10?
thanks

Whether someone loads or does not load win-10 is up to the individual
Seeing as your spouse had a turn for the worst isn't a good indicator to me :)
That's about as close to first hand knowledge as it gets
