How about Windows 7 SP-1/SE
I tried the W10 in a laptop and I liked. An increase in performance.
Just got this one or at least just noticed it as a Optional

Issues that are fixed in this update
Issue 1
When you install updates by using System Center Configuration Manager, the installation takes a long time, and System Center Configuration Manager becomes overloaded.
Issue 2
The Svchost.exe process occupies 100 percent of CPU usage when you upgrade a Windows Update client to Windows 10.
An easy way to deal with this crap: take W7 offline permanently, use it only for things you absolutely need it for. (For me, that's music creation). Find a Linux distro you like, and use that for all Internet activity. You can download software for W7 with Linux. Then put it on W7 (running a malware scan on it if you feel the need).
If M$ has so screwed up your W7 that you can't get it clean of this infection, take it back to before this sh*t started, with a system image. Then keep it offline.
I actually had to disable automatic checking for updates back in May because it seemed every time it would check for those updates on its daily schedule both cores of my CPU would shoot to 100% usage for a good 15 minutes straight and it had the worst habit of starting the check when I was running something, slowing the whole computer to a crawl. After some exploration I learned that the update check was the culprit.
It should not do that. It shouldn't eat up the CPU just to check for updates or take that long to get a list. I didn't even have to set to download or anything, merely check. At least MSE's daily update is unobtrusive enough that it doesn't eat up the CPU.
Wait... I read through the thread but I'm kind of confused. Is disabling "Give me reccomend updates the same way I recieve important updates" the only thing I have to do for now to prevent Windows 10 from being installed automatically? I still want to leave important updates to install automatically because I often forget about things like this. Also, I don't want to change anything else to completely get rid of the update because that still feels kind of risky. I'll also just download any other recommended updates manually if I see it update automatically on Patch Tuesday.
(I'm using Windows 8.1 K and another machine with regular Windows 8.1)
If you've unticked the recommended box then it "shouldn't" download the installer.
Although, the way MS is pushing 10, I wouldn't be surprised if it's still downloaded on to your HDD when set to Automatic.
I never have mine set to Auto, just to check.
