Can't login after Windows 7 update

I just talked to a client of mine with the same problem. You need to back out of the updates. You can do this by performing a system restore. Reboot the computer and hit F8 repeatedly as it's booting up. When asked, choose Repair Windows. You will be asked for your password here, assuming you have one. At some point you will be given several choices, one is System Restore. Choose that and pick the previous system image from before the system update (I like to choose the one prior, just to be sure). This will not lose any of your files, it just changes the OS. Then do the restore. This fixed her problem. Afterwards, go into Windows update and turn off automatic updates, and wait at least a couple of weeks until they resolve this problem.

I expect Microsoft will find out about this one and fix it within a week or two, if not tomorrow if it's really bad.

Exact same error on Motion J3500 tablet, but it's running Sophos Encryption so we can't run any of the start up tools, won't boot into safe mode. How do we roll back an update without booting into Windows? We can browse the file structure by booting from the Sophos encryption disc. We have 60 or so of these tablets out in the field, all over the country, I'm dreading the idea of all of them being returned to be flattened and installed from scratch.

After installing updates on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC yesterday, I had the issue where the user logon screen was visible, but clicking on a user resulted in a flash of the screen and then right back to the user login screen.

I tried a system restore, but then then Windows wouldn't run at all. I booted to a command line and ran

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

After that, I was able to login.

I wasn't sure which update caused this problem, so thanks for posting. I ran updates after getting back in, and the same thing happened! Glad to know which one it was now.

We managed to use Kaseya to run a couple of scripts and force the machine to log in as the administrator account, once it was logged in we could connect remotely, remove the update, disable automatic updates (these tablets are on the verge of being phased out anyway) and then change the registry keys we had changed in the scripts back to their defaults. All in all, close to a best case scenario considering where we were yesterday.
