Computer random freeze up -- could it be mouse/keyboard??

I have read dozens of threads now on the freeze up problem in Win 7 64 bit and tried everything. Updated most drivers, did memtest86 - 3 passes, no errors (even removed and reinstalled ram), checked temperatures, cleaned dust out of box, etc., etc. I finally gave up and in an attempt to resolve, I upgraded to Win 10. And computer is still freezing randomly, with no consistency on programs being run. Sometimes after 10 minutes, sometimes, several hours before it freezes. Computer is Dell Studio 540. The Win 10 upgrade was supposed to be a clean upgrade just bringing over my files, but it actually brought everything, I believe. It looks that way, anyway.

But the thing I noticed, is that the computer will complete a lengthy task even though it will not respond to input from the mouse or keypad. I must hard restart it to get back input control.

I am going to try a different mouse and keyboard in case that is the problem ( currently using Logitech MK300). I am not hopeful.

This has been going on for weeks now and is driving me crazy. Appreciate any help.

I think it is not caused by mouse/keyboard.
Essentially, since almost everything in most pc is connected to a single bus, it could be anything, including a bad card, overheating, memory error, and even a faulty USB plug or cord on some older systems. malware can sometimes cause a denial of service by hogging all available resources, but usually the only thing that can cause a complete system lock-up/freeze is the video card. Everything else generates some kind of error log, message, reboot, or blue or black screen, in my experience.
If the computer processor is getting too hot, it can cause the computer to freeze, i have this problem once.

Boot a linux live cd/dvd/usb stick.
If the computer freezes, you have a hardware problem. If it doesn't freeze, then it is a software problem.

Well, it has been 4 days now and my problem is solved--no thanks to anyone on this site.

It actually was my mouse/computer. I changed the wireless transmitter to another USB port and changed the batteries in both. Problem solved.

I also went back from win10 to Windows 7. What a relief. If you have windows 7, please think twice before changing.

Thanks for the update - very enlightening. I've been having the same problem for months. However, I never need to re-boot/restart - system always revives after maybe 15-30 seconds or sometimes longer.

I know my battery is weak and needs replacing and I've been thinking that maybe the weak battery is causing the intermittent freeze (even though I'm always running while plugged-in to AC) . So your post makes me think that even more so than before.

Has anyone else solved their freeze problem by replacing the PC battery?
