All Windows operating systems reach a time when they are no longer supported. It would be unreasonable to expect otherwise. Many operating systems have past that point, XP being the most recent on April 8, 2014. Windows 7 passed into extended support on Jan 13, 2015 which will terminate Jan 14, 2020. Windows 10 support too will terminate, currently scheduled for Oct 14, 2025.

These are not rumors but public statements published by Microsoft.

The main result of support termination is that there will be no new Windows updates. Existing updates are still available for XP but that too will cease, as it did for Windows 2000. Of course that does not mean the OS cannot be used. Many individuals, businesses, and Government organizations, etc, are currently using XP and that is expected to continue for some time. Many individuals are using even older operating systems as their primary or only OS.

I suppose it could just be a statement to cover their bases but I thought Microsoft stated windows 10 would be the "last version" of windows... and they would be releasing periodic updates to improve it as time goes on but no major releases. If so how can they end support for windows 10 in 2025?

No, there will be many versions of Windows after 10. If they just issued Updates forever, they would not make any money.

Thanks. The terms used confuse me. To be clear:

    >> New versions of viruses and malware will continue to appear for all time. Will Microsoft continue to issue security updates for Windows 7 to safeguard us until 2020?

    >> New types of software will continue to appear. Will Microsoft continue to issue suitable updates for Windows 7 to keep us going until 2020?

    Thanks.

    EDIT: added second question.

When an OS passes into extended support, as Windows 7 has, it will receive Windows updates but only for security issues.
