win 7 logon asking for nonexistant password

Allowed windows update at shut down, following morning computer boots to sign in screen, asking for password. I have never used a password for windows. When trying to boot into safe mode, it skips to the logon screen bypassing safe mode completely. I am stuck at this point and can't get any further.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First things first. At the password screen don't bother entering a password. Instead, just press the ENTER key.

If that fails you may wish to try a password recovery tool. Here's a link to several free ones. Basically, you download one of the free recovery tool programs and burn it onto a blank CD or DVD. Then you insert the CD in the problem computer and boot from the disk.

    Good luck.
