Hard Drive properties set to Full

I'm assisting someone who's son had accidentally set a non-system HD (the entire HD) security properties to full restrictions for EVERYBODY to prevent someone from deleting his files. Now not even he can delete, open, copy, or move files and folders. When attempting to do so he gets a warning that only an administrator can change the properties. The problem is I don't know how to do this. They had never been aware of an administrator account. They did not set one up and therefore are not aware of any passwords if they require one.

Is there a way to reset/unblock the properties? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will not have much access to their computer so I will do my best in relaying the steps involved. Here's hoping he will not lose any files!

You didn't say which version of Windows (it could be a factor) but start by reading this tutorial then get back to us:
