All those drop down boxes have 3 choices:
    Show icon and notifications
    Hide icon and notifications
    Only show notifications
    Pick your poison.
Also some programs, like Skype, have settings to show or not show icons. They can be disabled
    from there.
    Good luck.

When you exit Skype it stays in the background as it assumes you will probably need it again soon. So the icon stays in the notification area.

You actually have to Right Click on the icon showing in the notifications area & click on exit, which should delete the icon as well. Until you run Skype again.

When you install some programs they may have an option to show an icon in the notification area & this is usually ticked & you have to untick it or it will show in the notification area.

You should be able to go into the options in the program & change this setting, so it doesn't show.
