How can I prevent my Windows 7 from auto-restarting?

My work is frequently interrupted with notices that I need to restart my Windows 7 machine. If I try to defer it, it only allows me to postpone this mandatory restart for a few hours. I'd really like to disable this 'feature'. My work is pretty important to me, but I'm sure a mandatory Windows reboot is NOT necessary for what I'm doing. I'd really like to disable this for long periods of time, like maybe 1 year, and then just do a single reboot at that point in time.

Can someone let me know how I can control this system? Now, it just seems to be out of control.

    Thanks so much!!!

Just remember to check for Windows Updates manually.

I have my Windows 7 Updates set like this. That way you can choose what updates you get and when. Therefore you can reboot when you choose.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. Thanks to both of you.

Just one more question. Why are there so many Windows updates? I've worked with Linux machines at work and they can run for years without needing to reboot.

Microsoft has over a billion system in the world on various equipment and used in various way.
To keep as many system working properly they are constantly trying to make Windows better and safer.
Many update will not install unless you reboot because what ever is getting updated is in use and can't be update while in use.
That is why the reboot is necessary.

That is the normal; NOW we have Microsoft trying to slip W-10 things into Windows 7 and that is why one must look before installing. Otherwise you just might get updated right into Windows 10.

You must be way behind on updates or something.

The only day you will get multiple updates is on a Tuesday, which of course today is/was :)

Any other day of the week you`ll just get MSE definition updates, which don`t cause a reboot. (usually)
