    A better OS ?

Ultimate is no better then Pro.

To make it run better. You could do 3 things. Don`t count #3 if it`s a laptop.

    Max out the memory
    Install windows on a ssd
    Upgrade the cpu

It`s slow because you have a 1.6 GHz cpu, and your hard drive only spins at 5400 RPM

Open the start menu, right click "Computer", and click "Properties"

Can you screenshot the window that pops up, or more specifically, the section which says "Installed memory (RAM): "

If your graphics chip is "borrowing" 1GB of RAM then it's not worth upgrading to 64 bit, if your graphics chip is only borrowing something like 256MB of RAM then you'll see perhaps a marginal benefit in upgrading to 64 bit.

Either way though, if the machine only came with 1GB of RAM, I can't imagine the spec of the rest of the machine would see much benefit in utilising an extra (at best) 512MB RAM.

EDIT: Just saw the last few responses and would have to agree with "AddRAM" (I love the name by the way).
