USB & BIOS issues
Hi. I have a feeling this thread could have gone under either the drivers, hardware or gaming section of the forums, so I decided to put it here as I have quite a few issues at the moment.
I recently got a new motherboard (Z97-P) and a new processor (i5-4690k). Everything seemed fine until I started connecting more USB-devices - especially the Saitek x52 Pro. After doing so other USB-devices have started acting weirdly, and sometimes even booting the computer is an issue. Making changes in BIOS is impossible.
1) The x52 Pro seems to prevent the computer from booting. Whenever the joystick is connected, I am asked to either start Windows normally, or enter Windows Repair Mode (I'm not quite sure if that's what it says on an English OS, mine isn't). If I choose WRM it starts looking for issues, but is unable to find any. If I select start Windows normally, a small, retro-style, gray bar appears at the bottom of the screen and says something like "Loading Files". After the it has finished loading, the screen goes black before a small white underscore starts flashing. Give it 10 seconds and I have entered BIOS, without even asking for it.
I am very rarely able to boot "properly" with the joystick is connected, it has happened a few times I've heard the Windows log-in audio, but the monitor has gone to sleep mode.
2) Sometimes I am unable to boot even with the joystick un-plugged, although after a couple of restarts I'm able to successfully boot. I am still not able to make any changes in the BIOS. If I make any changes, I save, the computer restarts, and I'm back to the loop between normal launch (retro-loading, BIOS) and WRM (searches for issues, can't find any, restart). To be able to boot properly I have to enter BIOS and reset the changes I've made.
3) USB connections are unstable. At startup my USB WiFi adapter can refuse to recognize itself. It usually starts by looking normal, but the adapter then disconnects, and there's an evergoing disconnect-sound. I have to manually re-plug it, and wait for the internet connection to show in the task tray. As soon as it shows I need to troubleshoot issues, and the adapter will reset itself, and the problem is gone.
This has also happened a few times hours after I've started the computer. I have to do the same thing: Re-connect, troubleshoot.
4.1) I have installed the USB 3.0 drivers for my motherboard. I am not using the USB 3.0 ports for anything but USB 3.0 devices.
4.2) I am not sure if I have updated my BIOS. I do remember updating my BIOS once, but whether or not it was on this or the old motherboard I am not sure. If there's a way to find out if it's updated or not I'll gladly find out and post the results here. I have no idea if a BIOS-upgrade/-downgrade may cause/fix issues.
4.3) The Saitek x52 Pro driver and software is such a hassle to install, and I have given up until my issues above have been fixed - there's obviously no reason to even try when I can't boot up properly with it connected.
Hopefully some smart souls can help me out, as I'm getting so sick of this. If you need any more information please ask, I will do my best to provide you.
Thank you!
