I couldn't loggin today due to W7 asking for my password. I haven't had to enter a password in a long time and now it's prompting me again. I forgot what it initially was and had at some point done something to prevent it from asking for a password but now it's started back.
When I tried to reset it a "Password Wizard" came up wanting me to insert a password reset disk? What's that all about? I don't have a password reset disk and never did. What's going on?
Not sure if this falls in the category of Rule 6 of the forum rules.

But seeing that my suggestion comes off the Windows DVD it's not really a hack but put in by MS.

I just did a system restore and that fixed the problem. However, next boot up it may ask again. I don't know what triggered it asking for a password.
I'm not sure about why it's asking for a password in the first place, if you never set one, but the Password Wizard lets you reset the password if you've forgotten your current one. However, the way it works is that after you've set a password, you can set up a password reset disk, where Windows saves a password reset function onto a disk (USB for example). If you forget your password in the future, you can insert the disk, click "reset password" and you can set a new one. It's a little like a recovery disk, but for your password only.
I was prompted early on when I got the computer to give a password but after that someone told me how to stop them from asking for it each time I booted up. I've had no further problems with that until today. I forgot what that password was and that's the problem. I can't go in and change the password as I don't recall what the old one was.
You must've made a reg-edit or similar edit to the software to prevent W7 from asking for a password, but still having one set. Do you remember what you did at all?
I haven't been into the registry. Now that I've done a system restore and it's up, I need to fix it where next time it won't ask for a password again or I"ll be back where I started.
I made a password reset disc on CD as well as a flash drive and it won't work. when I tried making one the only drives they give were the four small ones on the front of my XPS 8700 which are Cf/SD type drives. It gives no options for a USB or CD/DVD drive.
Auto Login.
Hit Windows key+R, type control userpasswords2 and click OK:
Uncheck the box that says “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”
Click OK. When the box pops up, type in your username and password (if you do not have a password, leave it blank) Restart. Your Good.
