Strange things happening with the Black Hole

I purchased a legal Windows 7 CD from Amazon and wanted to install it on a PC I was rebuilding. It installed and activated just fine by phone. The disk says it's intended for refurbished PC's. I started having trouble with the first program I tried to install, Malwarebytes, it stopped working before it finished installing. The same thing with Reg Cure. then program after program stopped working in one form or another. I decided to connect to the internet and run Windows update. That wouldn't work either. When I checked the list for any updates that might have made it through I found that 1 had been installed during the OS install, KB976902, websites call it the Black Hole. It was put out November 20th 2010 to stop piracy of MS Operating Systems.

In a short time the hard drives were disabled and all the browsers stopped working and the PC became useless. I thought there must be something wrong with the PC and installed the new OS on a different one and it did the same thing. Before it became unusable I checked Windows update and there was that same KB976902. This time the PC hadn't even been online.

I now have 2 pieces of junk that were great working PC's just a few hours before. Is this something Microsoft put out or is it Malware? Microsoft doesn't list a Windows update with that number.

Check whether there are restore points from before the installation of that KB and set back to those.

    Black Hole

I wish......... It was a clean install and the update came with the operating system. It even managed to corrupt the half dozen Acronis backups of the previous operating system. I wish I knew where it was stored. I have a feeling it's in the bios because when I couldn't get anything to work anymore I used the jumper to try to restore the bios and there wasn't a previous one to restore. I wiped the partition on the hard drive with zero's and tried to install a different one but it stalled at the point when it unpacks all the files. I even let sit and stew for several hours and it just hung there.

I've been doing this stuff for 25 years and have never had a problem like this I couldn't fix. There's always that first time!

Isn't there an option to not get Windows Updates when installing Win 7 ?

Did you look in Windows Update / Installed Updates to see if you can uninstall it, right after the clean install ?

My pic is from a Win 7 OS that was installed a long time ago.

It can't be uninstalled. MS designed it that way. Take a look at Google search of KB976902.

That's why you have to go back to a prior restore point or image.

This isn't the first time I've been bombed by MS. When Windows XP came out they shut down that one for me too. The only difference is they fixed it and send me a bunch of MS PC goodies to make up for it.

I'm sorry WHS but the update was installed on 11/20/2010 when the CD was made. How can there be a restore point or a image made from 5 years ago when it didn't reach my PC until today. Take my word for it if there was a restore or image I would be finishing the build right now.
