Just run it in a virtual partition. It's fun.

I'm running Zorin 9. Extremely stable. Zorin 12, the next long-term edition, should be out in July.

Some of you are saying that it will run nicely with 2 GB of RAM. That means nothing. The CPU is what matters. == In answer to the OP question. I have an old Pentium 4 that came with XP. I put Win 7 on it and it is SLOW. Just about too slow to use. Don't bother to try Win 7 on a Pentium. You won't be happy.
I've run Win 7 32-bit on Atom processors and even a P3 and it ran OK. It really matters what you are trying to do with it. For general tasks, it runs fine.

For those that are asking why not stick with XP, the OP said he doesn't feel safe running XP anymore so wants to move to a different OS.

As far as installing Linux, it's a matter of preference. I've run just about every distro of Linux and prefer Win 7 over any of them. As others have said, Linux does require fewer resources so performance will be better.

I installed Linux Mate and the computer is running quite smooth. As for the graphics and audio, they worked right off the back. I'm still getting used to the way Linux works, but so far I am enjoying it.
