Windows 7: User name different between GUI and net user

User name different between GUI and net user

This is my first post to this forum so I hope I have chosen the correct place.

I recently created a new user on my Win 7 PC but decided, since my own profile had become corrupt, to use the new one. For it to make sense I had to rename it. I followed the instructions on the MS web site to change the user name, rename the user\xxxxxx folder to the new name and edit the ProfileImagePath in the registry to the new name too. I also searched the registry and changed any instances of the old name. All this was dome in safe mode under the Administrator a/c, then I re-booted.

I now find that the new user is shown correctly in the GUI and the registry. However, net user still lists the old name, with no entry for the new name, and if I try to give files the new user name's permissions it says the object doesn't exist.

Is there some step that has been missed out in the instructions? How can I get the user to be recognised by the new name in all places?

Any help would be very welcome since I've not tried to rename users before but need to get myself a good working profile with accurate security.
