    Windows 7 display gone crazy

I downloaded a few updates, did a restart, and now the PC is unusable.
The Start button is really narrow and doesn't function.
There are vertical blocks that appear if you try to open anything on the taskbar, IE doesn't display the correct screen etc etc etc.
I have booted from the 7 disc, and tried a repair; no good.
I have booted from the 7 disc, and tried an earlier Restore point; no good.
    So now I'm lost.
    Help please.

Solved itself. Wish I'd done this earlier.
Went into Safe Mode, all the drivers etc loaded, but before it got there the screen went black, then back to the main screen with a message that Windows was installing updates.
So it looks as though some process was stuck somewhere.
    Pleased it's gone...................

It could be your computer by some means was shut down or messed with while Windows 7 was trying to install the updates after restart.
