Ah now that sounds clever! I can see why apps are popular then - doing things remotely like that. I think part of our problem is we don't have smart phones so haven't got into the app world yet. We just have phone phones lol.
We probably have too much hardware. Two laptops, a child's laptop/netbook, an ipod touch (I put android on an eeepc so I could set up time limits on the ipod). I have three Eee PC's and a box full of half EEE PC's and spare parts lol.
From a Phone point of view my phone is now a good percentage of my site Tool-kit, Obviously its not a replacement for a screwdriver, but the fact that it's a Sound Meter, Wireless signal meter and countless other useful things, I even used it for teamviewer sessions when dealing with Headless Servers Though a laptop is better and a tablet is more practical
They sound like great work tools. And I do like a maps option. The only people we know with tablets just seem to play games on them! So a tablet can do things a laptop can't, so you need both I guess. I think we'll end up with Smartphones at some point.
Desktop user here too, and only just moved from xp LAST MONTH !
It took me the best part of 2 weeks to transfer, scanner, printer, email -going from OE to outlook was a nightmare, also learning my way around a new OS - I have better things to do with my life, a lot of my time has been spent of getting 7 to look and feel like xp. Stupid fade in or roll down "animated" menus just slow me down when I am working fast.
When support for 7 ends I will be glad not having to worry about installing updates that fix one thing and break another.
I don't think the support will last until 2020 at all, wouldn't surprise me if they pulled the plug on it tomorrow inorder to apply even more pressure on people to go to 10. After all that is the only reason support for xp ended because people did not want to give it up.
XP should have been killed off long before it was, unfortunately issues in the development of it's replacement meant it was the only real option for users until well past it's sell by date. A lot of users didn't know anything else and came to think that XP was the only OS ever.
There is some Clinging onto Seven for the sake of it, but Seven is streets ahead of XP, even before XP became to old.
There is a lot of sense in the attitude that if an OS works for you and your hardware and is still supported by the manufacturers to remain with what you have. As Seven draws closer to it's eventual end of support, I can see that third party support will drop off in line with the expected drop off in users as those that change their OS when they change their hardware, (the vast majority of users).
Microsoft and most other OS developers aim to update every two to three years as the industry is one that changes at that speed, of course Linux, as mostly an enthusiast OS, tend to upgrade more often, Some more than once a year, whereas Windows uses service packs to achieve the same outcome, between major releases, of course the plan is for windows 10 to remain active for the foreseeable future without a conventional planned lifetime - just updated as new functionality is possible or needed to meet consumer demand
If they were to pull the plug on Win7 support tomorrow, they would lose whatever crumbs of trust and goodwill people might still have towards MS. There are many businesses that have only fairly recently moved to Win7, and they are not going to upgrade again any time soon. MS is obligated to maintain support for the stated period. They can extend it (like they did with XP), but not cut it.
Support for Windows XP was not ended before the normal 'life cycle' time - in fact, it was extended for a couple of years.
That said, MS has been showing itself to be fairly obsessed with prodding people to go to Win10. They've already lost a lot of good will because of it. Even very pro-MS folks are crying foul over some of the malware-like tactics they've been using...
They may annoy a lot of people and lose some respect but they've got us over a barrel really! What alternative is there but to get the next version of WindowsThey know that some people can't afford Macs and don't understand Linux. But it would be nice if they could 'sell' Windows 10 rather than push it.
The alternative is to get it when there is no other choice and we still have choices for now.
