Why does my fan get really noisy just before I have updates?

It's becoming a regular story, and again tonight the same thing. Fan suddenly starts whizzing and there I am spending a couple of hours trying to get to the bottom of it, to no avail. I even checked to see if I have pending software updates as this seems to often be at the bottom of it, but no not that this time! Except, yes it was that again this time. Two hours later, finally I go to restart my computer and there's the little yellow exclamation mark next to 'shut down' alerting me to the fact I have 13 important updates pending.

Why does my computer keep doing this? Why does it not just alert me to the fact I have updates pending, then I can avoid spending half an evening try to work out why my set up is chewing up my CPU!

I checked to see if I had pending updates and it said everything was up to date, and so I go away and start looking at all my processes, running Glary Utilities, defragmenting my hard drive, restarting several times... then it decides to tell me. It does this EVERY TIME. Aaargh.

It does this because the Windows Update process is broken on some computers. For lots of people, the CPU and RAM usage goes high while the WU process searched the computer to see what updates might be needed. It should not hurt to reset Window Update via these steps: Windows Update - Reset However, it might not help.

Thanks. Comforting to know I'm not the only one having this recurring problem.

I'll have a look at that link later.

I'm probably going to upgrade to Win10 soon anyway, even though I don't really want to. Any advice there? Presumably I can save a back up point and go back if I really hate it. Better to just go with the flow or stick with what I know?

I don't plan on moving to W10 any time soon...
...so, I've not spent much time with it.

The few hours that I have spent with W10 have been frustrating.
