After reading thru this thread, I downloaded Opera. Then I thought to exit Firefox as a test --- made no difference at all. Hard drive just kept bumping away. So I restarted Firefox and exited the VPN program that I had used for years without problem in XP --- immediately the hard drive went quiet. For what it's worth. ...
